The Recipe Was Never Written Down
Lottie · For my granddaughter Fictional narrator · 2 min read
After Mama died, I made her Sunday peas three times. Each pot tasted wrong. My father ate every bowl and said nothing.
She had never measured anything. A little salt, the piece of onion that needed using, enough water to cover. I was thirty-nine and angry that she had left no instructions, although she had asked me to sit beside her often enough.

I called my aunt. She told me what went into the pot, then asked whether I was shelling the peas on the porch. I said the kitchen was quicker. She said she would come on Saturday.
We sat with a bowl between us. She told me about the summer Mama worked nights, the cousin who arrived hungry and stayed a month, the arguments those Sunday dinners had survived. By the time we went inside, I had laughed for the first time in weeks.
The food was better that evening. Perhaps I had finally used enough salt. I do not believe grief can be cured by a recipe. But when my father asked for another helping, I heard myself offering him the biggest bowl in Mama’s exact voice.
Now you sit beside me on this porch, asking for quantities. I will give them to you. I will also tell you whose bowl this was, why we always make extra, and which stories your great-grandmother repeated until everyone pretended to groan.
